Horror in Pakistan!

Hello Everyone,

I thought I would share this horrible story that took place in Pakistan today. Since we are learning about the Reel World, one of the historical topics through the years are the Real World Headlines of leaders assisination which is something always common in these types of governments.

"BREAKING NEWS
updated 30 minutes ago

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan - Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday by an attacker who shot her after a campaign rally and then blew himself up. Her death stoked new chaos across the nuclear-armed nation, an important U.S. ally in the war on terrorism.
At least 20 others were killed in the attack on the election rally where the 54-year-old former prime minister had just spoken.
Angry supporters rioted in the southern port city of Karachi after her killing, firing shots at police, setting tires and cars on fire and burning a gas station. One person was killed north of Karachi in the violent aftermath of the assassination. "

Thanks for this Aline. I've been looking for ways to work in the all-too-real world reality of today's events. This is shocking in any case and potentially very destabilizing in a region that is already anything but stable. Jeff

Thanks, Aline. I have been thinking all day of how amazingly this ties in to our class. It has been interesting to hear all of the different commentators give their impressions of her today.

With all of the past attempts on Bhutto's life, I really didn't except her to be killed. Couple that with the news of the tiger killing in the San Francisco zoo and we are caught in an interesting place. The lion is out of the cage.

It is a very scary feeling when hearing of news that shake the world. In these days anything can happen even a tigger that escapes and endager humans!

Bhutto was an expectionally powerful woman in a part of the world that does not welcome powerful women - her loss is a great loss for both Pakistan and women in the Middle East. I met Bhutto in 2003 when she came to speak at Elon (I was working in their International office at the time). She carried herself with such grace. Despite previous accusations of corruption in her government, her involvement in Pakistan could only have brought good. What a sad world when people resort to violence like this.
